Fast-track hernia repair

Hernia surgery so you can get back to work

Self-funded, FIFO, and time-pressured hernia repair in Western Australia with Dr Stephen Watson. Most patients are seen within one week of referral.

Hernias don't wait — and neither should you

For many patients, a hernia is more than a medical problem. It's a financial and work pressure. A sole-trader tradesperson who can't lift can't earn. A FIFO worker who fails a pre-deployment medical loses a roster. A new hire whose hernia turns up at induction can lose the start date. A parent with a painful hernia has to choose between the school run and the couch.

This page is for patients who need their hernia fixed quickly and cleanly so they can get back to work and life. Dr Watson runs his rooms with this in mind.

Who this page is for

  • Self-employed tradespeople and contractors who can't lift
  • FIFO workers who've failed a pre-deployment medical
  • New hires whose hernia was found at induction screening
  • Workers without private health insurance facing public waitlists
  • Parents and carers struggling with daily activities

How quickly can I be seen?

Most patients are offered a consultation within one week of referral. Telehealth consultations are available across all of Western Australia; in-person consultations are available in South Perth and at country visits in Mandurah, Rockingham, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, Esperance, Port Hedland, and Karratha.

For straightforward repairs in otherwise well patients, surgery can typically be scheduled within a few weeks of the consultation, sometimes sooner depending on hospital availability.

Fees and out-of-pocket costs

Hernia surgery has three cost components: surgeon fees, anaesthetist fees, and hospital fees. The amount you pay depends on your insurance situation. For a personalised written quote based on your specific case, please contact our rooms — we will provide MBS item numbers and itemised estimates so you can plan with certainty.

If you have private health insurance

Private health insurance with hospital cover (typically bronze tier or above) usually covers hernia repair at the private hospitals Dr Watson operates at. Out-of-pocket cost varies by health fund, by excess, and by whether your fund has a "known gap" arrangement with the hospital. The rooms can confirm details before booking.

If you're self-funded

A full itemised estimate is provided at consultation. Medicare rebates apply against surgeon and anaesthetist fees for medically indicated hernia repair, even if you are paying privately for the rest. The rebate covers part of the fee.

If your hernia is work-related

You may not need to be on this page at all — see workers compensation hernia surgery for the WorkCover pathway, where the insurer pays approved expenses.

DVA cardholders

Dr Watson accepts DVA gold and white card referrals.

Return-to-work timelines by job type

  • Office / desk work: typically 1–2 weeks
  • Light manual work: typically 3–4 weeks
  • Heavy manual / FIFO / mining: typically around 6 weeks before unrestricted lifting
  • FIFO swing scheduling: discussed at consultation and tailored to your roster

These are general guidelines, not guarantees. Recovery varies between patients.

Medical certificates and documentation

Dr Watson provides certificates for time off work, fitness-for-work certifications, and pre-employment medical follow-up letters as needed. Bring any forms your employer or pre-employment medical provider requires to your appointment, and the rooms will help complete them.

Pre-employment medicals — what to do if a hernia has been flagged

Many WA employers — especially in mining, FIFO, and construction — require a pre-employment medical. A hernia finding does not have to disqualify you. Early surgical assessment and repair often resolves the issue and clears the pre-employment medical at follow-up. Don't delay. Talk to the rooms; treatment can usually be moved forward to fit your start date.

Common questions

How soon can I have surgery if I self-fund?

For uncomplicated hernias and patients who are otherwise well, surgery can typically be scheduled within a few weeks of the consultation, sometimes sooner. Specific timing depends on hospital theatre availability and your own circumstances. Dr Watson's rooms can give you realistic dates at the time of booking.

Can I claim part of the cost back from Medicare?

Yes. Medicare rebates apply to surgeon and anaesthetist fees for medically indicated hernia repair, even for self-funded patients. The rebate covers part of the fee. The rooms can provide MBS item numbers and an itemised estimate so you can plan with certainty.

What if I cannot afford the surgery upfront?

Talk to the rooms. Options include using available private health insurance benefits, claiming Medicare rebates against surgeon and anaesthetist fees, and in some cases combining these to bring the upfront cost down. The rooms do not offer payment plans as a marketing hook, but practical conversations about how to fund care are part of what they do.

Do I need a GP referral if I am paying privately?

Yes — a current GP referral is required for Medicare rebates to be claimed against your consultation and surgeon fee. Without a referral, no Medicare rebate applies. A GP referral lasts 12 months.

Will my pre-employment medical accept post-surgery clearance?

Most do. Dr Watson can provide a clearance letter once you are at the appropriate stage of recovery. Some employers and pre-employment medical providers have specific requirements — bring the paperwork to your consultation and the rooms will assist.
